Water and You

Water helps nearly every part of the human body function efficiently. Considering that our bodies are almost two-thirds water, it is important to understand water's role in healthy lifestyles. The following are just some of the things water does in the body:

  • Water helps regulate the body’s temperature, keeping within the acceptable 98.6°. Water also carries nutrients and oxygen to all cells in the body; aids in the absorption of nutrients and helps to convert food into energy, as well as protecting and cushioning vital organs;
  • 92% of Blood is water; water also makes up 75% of your muscles, 92% of your lungs, and 22% of your bones.
  • Although a person can live without food for several days, a person can not live for more than a couple of days without water.
  • It is recommended to consume 8-10 cups (8 ounce servings) of water per day. Not drinking enough water (dehydration) can cause numerous negative effects. Headaches are probably most common effect of dehydration, other effects include: heartburn, sore muscles, high blood pressure, kidney stones and fatigue.
